Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 6321
19th century French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt by Poussielgue-Rusand.
The Chalice and Paten are made in solid silver, both pieces are gilded all over. Both are hallmarked with the French silver mark throughout
Both pieces were made by Placide Poussielgue-Rusand (1824-1899), one of the most highly respected French Ecclesiastical Silversmiths of the second half of the 19th century.
Poussielgue-Rusand made many high quality pieces of Church Silver, and both these pieces bear his maker's mark.
The round base is finished with four oval shaped enamels worked in blue and gold. These depict The Crucifixion, St Anthony of Padua, St Edmund and St Aemilius.
Between these enamels is decorative filigree work of leaves and fine beading work, with four small blue and gold enamels of quatrefoil crosses.
The knop is finished with the same fine filigree work as on the base, edged with beading.
The cup has four more oval shaped blue and gold enamels. These depict The Four Evangelists: Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The same finely worked filigree leaves are interspersed between these enamels, with four more quatrefoil blue gold crosses set between.
The matching well shaped Paten has a finely engraved picture to the centre depicting Our Lord with Holy Communion.
Chalice height 22cm. Base diameter 13cm. Diameter of top of cup 9.8cm. Diameter of Paten 14.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 770g.
