19th century French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt with Porcelain Enamels.
The Chalice and Paten were made by the French silversmith A Brigaud, who worked in Paris from 1861 onwards. His work includes Chalices made for the Sanctuary in Lourdes.
Chalice and Paten are made in solid silver and both pieces are gilded all over. Both are hallmarked with the French silver mark & the silversmith's maker's mark throughout.
The calix is finished with fine engraving work, set with three Enamels worked in pastel colours. The enamels depict the Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope & Charity.
The hexagonal stem leads to the shaped knop, finished throughout with the same themes of fine engraving.
The base is hexagonal in form, and is finished in an attractive shape.
It is finished with the same decorative engraving work.
On the base are set six more porcelain enamels, each set in finely shaped beading surrounds.
The enamels on the base depict images of the Four Evangelists, the Crucifixion, & Christ Teaching.
The matching well shaped Paten has a finely engraved image of the Victorious Lamb in the centre, surrounded with fine beading work.
Chalice height 25cm. Base diameter 15cm. Diameter of top of cup 9.5cm. Diameter of Paten 15.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 797g.
Complete with original fitted & lined 'mushroom' shape carrying case.
