Antique Gothic Chapel Set Ref 6847 - comprising Chalice, Cruets, and Sanctus Bell
Ornate 19th century French Gothic Chapel Set in solid silver gilt. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, pair of Cruets with Tray, Sanctus Bell.
The set was made by the well known French Silversmiths Demarquet Freres who worked in Paris from 1863 onwards.
The Chalice & Paten are made in solid silver, and are gilded all over; both bear the French silver hallmark and the maker's name.
The matching pair of cruets with tray are made in brass, gilded all over, with the cruets finished in crystal. The Sanctus Bell is also in brass gilt.
The large Gothic style Chalice is finished with fine enamels, filigree work, Gothic arches and figures.
The calix is made with Gothic filigree work. Set within four roundels are fine coloured enamelled pictures of the Four Evangelists.
In between these are four Gothic arches, each with a raised figure of an Angel.
The stem is octagonal and is finished with engraved Gothic windows and small raised Gothic arches between.
The central knop is decorative and is finished with four small enamels of four cherub heads, each individually made.
The bottom part of the stem is finished with more decorative Gothic arches, leading down to the octagonal base.
The eight petalled base has four coloured enamels, depicting the Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope & Charity, along with one enamel of the Crucifixion.
Between these enamels are four raised statuettes depicting various Saints: St Peter, St Paul, St John the Evangelist and Joseph.
The edge of the base is finished with decorative work and steps down to the bottom.
The matching well design Paten has a fine centrepiece of the Lamb with Seven Seals in coloured enamelled work. This is surrounded with fine raised gilt silver designs.
The centrepiece is finished with 'Agnus Dei Panis Vivus' engraved, with fine beading work round the edge.
The Paten is gilded all over and fits the Chalice well.
The height of the Chalice is 29cm; the diameter of the base is 17.5cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 10.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 15cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 1,250g.
The cruets and tray are finished with fine Gothic style engraving work to the brass gilt.
The tray has four pieces of filigree work set round the edges. At the two ends are round coloured enamels of Cherub heads, in the same style as on the Chalice.
The main parts of the cruets are made in crystal, fluted at the top with opaque crystal at the base. The lids to the cruets are hinged for opening.
The base of each cruet & of the tray is in a shaped octagonal design, to match the base of the Chalice.
The tray measures 39.5cm x 18.5cm at the maximum points. The cruets measure 18cm in height. The overall weight of the Cruets with the tray is 991g.
The Sanctus Bell is made in brass, gilded all over
The bell measures 11cm in height by 5.5cm in diameter at the base. The weight of the bell is 121g.
The set comes complete with the original lined, fitted case to incorporate the whole set.
The Chalice bears inscriptions on the base dated 25th October 1880 and 20th May 1888.
A note on the box confirms that the set was used by the Father Superior of the Sisters of Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs.
