Antique Gothic Chapel Set Ref 8413 - comprising Chalice & Paten, with Cruets and tray.
19th century French Gothic Chapel Set in solid silver gilt. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, pair of Cruets with Tray and Sanctus Bell.
The set was made by the French Silversmiths Demarquet Freres, who worked in Paris from 1868-1890.
All the pieces are made in solid silver, gilded all over. All pieces have the French silver hallmark of the period and the maker's name. The cruets are part crystal.
The set is finished with much fine filigree work throughout, with fine coloured enamels.
The Gothic style Chalice has a calix made in fine shaped filigree work. Three oval coloured enamels depict Faith, Hope & Charity.
The engraved hexagonal stem leads to the decorative knop, set with further fine filigree work. Six round coloured enamels depict Angels, each surrounded with fine beading.
The base of the stem is entirely finished with filigree work, leading to the hexafoil petalled base.
Three petals are filled with a coloured enamel, these depict The Baptism of Our Lord, The Crucifixion and The Resurrection. The remaining three petals are finished with filigree.
The base steps down to the edge with rows of fine beading to each step.
The matching well design Paten has a circular coloured enamel of the Agnus Dei at the centre. This is surrounded with engraving work and beading. It fits the Chalice well.
The height of the Chalice is 28cm; the diameter of the base is 17cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 10.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 15cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 1,004g.
The cruets are made in crystal with silver gilt casing work, base, top, lid and handle.
The silver casing is gilded all over. The lids are finished with grapes and bulrushes to differentiate them.
The bases are finished with fine filigree work and engraving.
The crystal parts are individually engraved with grapes and wheat respectively.
The tray is gilded all over. It is finished with filigree panels and engraving all round the sides with beading at the edge. A coloured Gothic style enamel is at either end.
The tray measures 26cm x 15cm at the maximum points. The cruets measure 17cm in height. The overall weight of the Cruets with the tray is 713g.
The matching Sanctus Bell is also made in solid silver, and is gilded all over.
It has grapes at the top of the handle, with the main bell finished with engraved and fine filigree panels. Beading completes the bottom edge.
The bell measures 11cm in height. The weight of the bell is 109g.
The overall total weight of the whole set is 1,826g.
The set comes complete with the original lined, fitted case to incorporate the whole set.
