Antique Gothic Chapel Set Ref 8422 - comprising Chalice & Paten, with Cruets and tray.
19th century French Gothic Chapel Set in solid silver gilt. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, pair of Cruets with Tray and Sanctus Bell.
The set was made by the highly renowned French Silversmith Placide Poussielgue-Rusand (1824-1889)
All the pieces are made in solid silver, gilded all over, except for the brass Sanctus Bell. There are the maker's marks and French hallmark of the period.
The set is covered throughout with rich decorative work, coloured enamels and stones.
The Gothic style Chalice has a calix set with ovals outlined in fine beading. Each oval contains a circular enamel and a coloured stone below.
The blue-gold enamels depict Ezechial, Isiah, Jeremiah and Daniel. Between these are four colourful Gothic style cross enamels.
The hexagonal stem is made with Gothic arches, with windows through to the centre.
The knop octagonal knop is set with eight circular enamels in colourful Gothic style crosses.
The octafoil petalled base is richly decorated throughout. Each petal has a circular enamel. The four blue-gold enamels depict The Last Supper, The Crucifixion, The descent from the Cross and St Thomas with Our Lord.
Between these are four circular colourful enamels in Gothic floral designs.
The edge of the base steps down with engraving set in the bottom step.
The matching well design Paten has a large blue-gold enamel of the Agnus Dei worked to the centre, with the text 'Panis Vivus Agnus Dei'. It fits the Chalice well.
The height of the Chalice is 25cm; the diameter of the base is 16.5cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 10.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 15.5cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 1,059g.
The cruets and tray are made completely in solid silver, gilded all over, richly finished with enamels.
The lid to each cruet has a coloured stone to each (red or white for distinguishing each).
The cruets are finished with finely painted enamel work in a floral design over the entire piece.
Circular blue-gold enamels to the main part each cruet depict Grape Vines for the wine cruet, and The Holy Spirit for the water cruet.
The circular base of each cruet is also finished with floral coloured enamel work.
The tray is finished with engraving work and fine beading all round the shaped edges.
There are four circular blue-gold enamels depicting Daniel, Ezechial, Isiah and Jeremiah.
Set between these are eight colourful enamels with Gothic cross designs.
The tray measures 29cm x 18.5cm at the maximum points. The cruets measure 15.5cm in height. The overall weight of the Cruets with the tray is 715g.
The Sanctus Bell is made in brass and is finished with decoration throughout, incorporating crosses.
The bell measures 8.5cm in height. The weight of the bell is 132g.
The overall total weight of the whole set is 1,906g.
The set comes complete with the original lined, fitted case, to incorporate the whole set. The case bears the original maker's name.
