Antique Gothic Chapel Set Ref 8475 - comprising Chalice & Paten, Ciborium, Sanctus Bell, and Cruets and tray.

19th century French Gothic Chapel Set in solid silver The set comprises Chalice with Paten, Ciborium, Sanctus Bell, and pair of Cruets with Tray, all in the presentation case.
The set was made by the French Silversmith Louis Bachelet, who worked in Paris between 1844 and 1877.
Bachelet worked with the best silversmiths and designers of this period including Poussielgue-Rusand and Viollet-le-Duc.
All the main pieces are made in solid silver, with parts gilded. There are the maker's marks and French hallmark of the period to all the pieces. The bell is in silver-plated brass.
The set is made with contrasting gilded decorations throughout.
Many of the pieces have a coat of arms engraved, presumably belonging to the original owner of this beautiful set.

The Gothic style Chalice has an engraved gilded band round the centre of the cup, with the words 'Hic est calix novum testamentum in sanguine meo+'.
Below this are finely engraved gilded roundels.
The hexagonal stem leads to the decorative knop, finished with six diamond shaped gilded lozenges.
The hexafoil petalled base is finished with six gilded circular roundels with Gothic style engraving.
The matching well design Paten has a large Agnus Dei engraved in the centre, with the text 'Agnus Dei Panis Vivus' set round. It has the coat of arms engraved. The Paten fits the Chalice well.
The height of the Chalice is 22cm; the diameter of the base is 15.5cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 9.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 15cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 598g.

The matching Gothic style Ciborium has an engraved gilded band round the lid, with the words 'Et verbum caro factum est et habitavit in nobis +'.
The Ciborium is finished with a cross to the top.
The stem is hexagonal with a knop matching that of the Chalice.
The hexafoil petalled base is finished with six gilded circular roundels with Gothic style engraving to match the Chalice.
The coat of arms is engraved on the base of the stem.
The height of the Ciborium to the top of the cross is 17cm; the diameter of the base is 10.5cm; the diameter of the top of the bowl is 8cm; the depth of the bowl is 4cm.
The weight of the Ciborium is 279g.

The cruets and tray are made completely in solid silver and match the designs used on the Chalice and the Ciborium.
Hexagonal shapes are used throughout the lid, main body and base.
The wine cruet has a bunch of grapes to the lid, with the text 'Vinum germinans virgines' engraved just below the lid.
The water cruet has a bunch of bulrushes to the lid, with the text 'Sicianti dabo dafonte aquae vitae' engraved just below the lid.
The hexagonal panelled body of each cruet is engraved with six gilded roundels to match the Chalice & Ciborium. The coat of arms is also engraved to one panel.
The hexafoil petalled bases are engraved with the same gilded roundels in Gothic designs.
The tray is in solid silver, and has the coat of arms engraved at the centre.
The tray measures 28cm x 16.5cm at the maximum points. The cruets measure 16.5cm in height. The overall weight of the Cruets with the tray is 753g.

The matching Sanctus Bell is made in brass, silver plated all over.
The bell measures 11cm in height. The weight of the bell is 106g.
The overall total weight of the whole set is 1,736g.
The set comes complete with the original lined, fitted case supplied by the silversmith, to incorporate the whole set. The case has a working lock with key.
