Antique Baroque Chapel Set Ref 8772 - comprising Chalice, Paten & Ciborium
Mid 19th century French Baroque Chapel Set in solid silver gilt. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, and matching Ciborium.
The set was made by the Silversmith Joseph-Philippe-Adolphe DeJean, who worked in Paris between 1846 and 1865.
All the pieces are made in solid silver, and are gilded all over; each piece bears the French silver hallmark of the period. The Chalice and Ciborium bear the maker's mark of DeJean.
The Chalice and Ciborium are both finished with baroque style decoration, biblical scenes and raised Cherub heads.
The Chalice has a calix set with three oval roundels of the Holy Family, surrounded by Baroque style decoration.
The circular stem has a large central knop, set with raised winged Cherub heads and decoration.
The shaped circular base has three large oval scenes, depicting The Last Supper, Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and The Crucifixion.
The edge of the base steps down with outer edge finished with pairs of raised Cherub heads and bunches of grapes with flowers.
The outer edge is in a decorative fluted shape all round.
The blending well design Paten has a large central scene of The Transfiguration, surrounded with fine beading work. The Paten was made in France between 1819 and 1838. It is made in solid silver and gilded all over.
The Paten fits the Chalice very well.
The height of the Chalice is 32cm; the diameter of the base is 18cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 9.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 17cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 872g.
The design of the Ciborium echoes that of the Chalice, with many of the same shapes.
The circular lid on top of the Ciborium is finished with three large circular raised images depciting Faith, Hope and Charity. Between these are Grapes, Wheat and Bulrushes.
In the centre of the lid, the cross is in Baroque style and finished with decorative work.
The bowl of the Ciborium has three pairs of large raised winged Cherub heads. Between these are large raised busts of The Holy Family.
The circular stem has a large central knop, finished with baroque style decoration.
The base of the Ciborium is the same shape as the Chalice base.
The upper part of the base has three large images depicting The Nativity, The Crucifixion and The Descent from the Cross.
Between these images are Grapes, Wheat and Bulrushes.
The lower part of the base is finished with pairs of raised Cherub heads, with baroque decoration between.
The outer edge is in a decorative fluted shape all round, matching the Chalice.
The overall height of the Ciborium to the top of the cross is 35cm; the diameter of the base is 17.5cm; the diameter of the top of the bowl is 12.5cm; the depth of the bowl is 6.5cm.
The overall weight of the Ciborium is 799g.
The total combined weight of all three pieces in the set is 1,671g.
The set is presented in a brand new lined fitted carrying case with working key to lock.
