Antique Baroque Chalice Ref 4669
Very fine late 19th century workmanship by the French Master Silversmith Favier for Bishop Emile Lesur, whose Coat of Arms is engraved on the cup.
The Chalice and Paten are both made entirely in solid silver, and both pieces are gilded all over. Both pieces are fully hallmarked with the French silver mark, and the maker's name.
Scenes on the calix illustrate The Baptism of Christ, Christ and the Samaritan woman, and the Resurrection. These scenes are worked in relief with very fine workmanship.
The large knop has oval roundels illustrating six of the twelve Apostles, interspersed with decorative work.
The smaller lower knop is finished with three tiny cherub heads and beading.
The base has three large raised heads depicting Our Lord (with small 7mm stone set below), Our Lady and St Joseph. Set between these are raised Cherub heads and decorative work incorporating ears of wheat.
The periphery of the base is finished with portraits of the remaining six Apostles, set in oval roundels. Between these are designs incorporating grapes of the vine.
The matching Paten has a large centre-piece illustrating the Deposition from the Cross, surrounded with beading work.
