Antique Baroque Chalice and Paten Ref 6846
Large early 19th century French Chalice and Paten in Baroque style made in solid silver gilt.
The Chalice was made between the years 1819 and 1838, by the French silversmith Francois-Cecil Soccard who worked in Lyon during this period.
The blending Paten was made in France by the well known Silversmith, Marie Thierry, who worked in Paris from 1853 onwards.
Both pieces are made entirely from solid silver, and gilded all over. Both are hallmarked with the French silver mark of the period and bear the respective silversmith makers' marks.
On the Calix are three large oval busts depicting Christ, St Peter & the beloved disciple St John the Evangelist. Between these ovals are worked the Eucharistic symbols of wheat, grapes and bulrushes.
The round stem leads to the large and decorative knop. Underneath the knop are three roundels depicting The Crucifixion, Agnus Dei, and the Pious Pelican.
The bottom part of the stem is finished with further decorative work, and leads to the circular base.
The base has three images incorporating the Instruments of the Passion including the Ladder with Sponge & Lance, the Pillar with Whip, and the Cross with Nails, Hammer, Pincers and Dice.
The edge of the base is finished with more Baroque style decorative work incorporating festoons and tassels. The outer rim of the base is engraved all round with leaves.
Chalice comes with blending solid silver gilt well-design Paten. The centre of Paten has a large raised design of The Descent from the Cross, edged with beading and decorative work. The Paten fits the Chalice very well.
Chalice Height 33cm. Base diameter 17cm. Diameter of top of cup 9.5cm. Diameter of Paten 17cm. Overall weight 1,138g.
