Antique Baroque Chapel Set Ref 7302 - comprising Chalice, Paten & Cruets with tray
Ornate 19th century French Baroque Chapel Set in solid silver gilt. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, and matching pair of Cruets with tray.
The set was made in the years 1803-1809 by the Master Silversmith Jean-Charles Cahier (1772-1849) who worked in Paris from 1798 onwards.
Cahier was a very famous silversmith of this period, working for Kings Louis XVIII and Charles X of France.
The Chapel Set bears the coat of arms of Mathieu de Montmorency-Laval (1767-1826), a French Nobleman and prominent Statesman at this time in France.
A similar Chapel Set belonging to Cardinal Louis Francois de Rohan-Chabot is kept in the treasury at Besancon Cathedral.
All the pieces are made in solid silver, and are gilded all over; each piece bears the French silver hallmark of the period and the maker's mark.
The Baroque style Chalice is finished with Baroque style decoration throughout.
The calix, made in filigree, has wheat and grapes throughout, and three large rosettes. Between these are three round images of Our Lord, St Mary Magdalen and St John the Evangelist.
The circular stem and knop are finished with further decoration.
The round base has three images of the Passion: The garden of Gethsemane, Jesus falls under the Cross, and The Crucifixion.
Between these images are raised bunches of grapes with sheaves of wheat.
Around the bottom edge of the base are three flowers.
The matching well design Paten is covered with engraving. In the centre is an IHS, with Cross, Sacred Heart and crown of thorns.
Around the edge is decorative work interspersed with instruments of the Passion including the ladder, whip, column, nails, lance, spear.
The Paten is gilded all over and fits the Chalice well.
The height of the Chalice is 31.5cm; the diameter of the base is 16cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 9.5cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 16cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 1,098g.
The Cruets with matching tray echo the baroque style decoration used in the Chalice.
Each cruet is finished ornate decoration, incorporating grapes into one, and bulrushes in the other. The lids on the tops also reflect these differentials.
The ornate handles have a small rosette at the centre of the same style as on the Chalice calix.
The bottom parts of the cruets are finished with filigree work, fine engraving and fine beading.
The matching tray, also in solid silver gilt, has fine engraving round the edge, using the grapes, bulrushes and flowers as themes.
Between the engraving are four roundels depicting the Four Evangelists.
In the centre of the tray is the coat of arms of Mathieu de Montmorency-Laval (see above).
Each cruet measures 16.5cm in height at the maximum point; the base diameter of each is 5cm. The tray measures 31cm x 18.5cm at the maximum points.
The overall weight of the Cruets with tray is 873g.
The total combined weight of all the pieces in the set is 1,971g.
The Chapel Set comes with its original lined, fitted carrying case, with brass handle and fixings, complete with working key to lock.
