Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 7318
French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice made by the French silversmith Chevron, around the beginning of the 20th century.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, partly gilded, and partly silver, to provide contrast in the design.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both pieces bear their respective maker's mark.
The cup is gilded with contrasting engravings in silver, depicting scenes from the life of Christ, with Gothic decoration engraved between.
The circular stem and knop have more two tone decoration.
The circular base has is gilded and has more finely engraved scenes incorporating the Nativity, The Last Supper, and The Crucifixion.
The blending well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver and is also partly gilded, so it matches the Chalice exceptionally well. It has made by Henri Nesme, a silversmith of similar period, working in Lyon, France.
The Paten has engraving and a silver image of The Supper at Emmaus in the centre.
Chalice height 22cm. Base diameter 14.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 11cm. Diameter of Paten 14cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 687g.
