Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 8426
Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice & Paten made in France by highly renowned French Silversmith Armand-Calliat (1822-1901).
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have the maker's mark.
The calix to the cup is finely engraved all round with foliate designs. A large oval enamel to one side depicts Our Lady with two Angels.
The circular stem is finished with engraving and decoration, with the central knop finished with finely coloured enamels to the top side.
The quatrefoil petalled base has four large teardrop shaped enamels. These depict The Nativity, The Crucifixion, Saints Peter and Paul and Two Saints.
The enamels are surrounded with fine engraving work.
Between each petal is a small flower worked in enamel and gilding.
The edge of the base steps down with fine beading and engraving work to the edges.
The matching well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. It has a large enamel to the centre of a cross with the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the centre.
Chalice height 23.5cm. Base diameter 14.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 10.5cm. Diameter of Paten 15.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 1,100g.
Complete with original lined, fitted carrying case, with working key, bearing the maker's name of Armand-Calliat of Lyon.
