Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 8474
Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice made in France by the silversmith Felix Picard, who worked in Paris from 1866 onwards.
Blending Paten made by Demarquet Freres, who worked in Paris from 1863 onwards.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have their respective maker's mark.
The calix to the cup is made in decorative work. It is set with three quatrefoil shaped finely painted enamels depicting St Joseph, St Benedict and St Catherine.
The hexagonal stem is set with decoration. The central knop is engraved and is set with six large oval stones.
The hexafoil shaped pointed petalled base is decorated throughout. There are six further quatrefoil shaped enamels. These include The Pious Pelican, Our Lady and Child, The Phoenix.
Alongside these are The Coat of Arms of St Pius IX, and the Coat of Arms of the de la Rochefoucault family.
The edge of the Chalice steps down with beading to the sides.
The blending well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. It has a very fine blue enamel of the Holy Family to the centre, with the words 'Humiliavit semetipsum erat subditus illis'.
Chalice height 27cm. Base diameter 17cm. Diameter of top of cup 10.5cm. Diameter of Paten 15.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 1,163g.
