Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 8529
Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice & Paten made in France by highly renowned French Silversmith Armand-Calliat (1822-1901).
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have the maker's mark.
The cup has an upper band of decoration worked in blue shades of enamel, with tiny flowers and intricate beading throughout.
Below this, the calix is finely engraved with stylised designs incorporating grapes and bulrushes.
The stem is amde from six circular columns and is engraved with decoration. The central knop has tiny coloured enamels worked with delicate crosses.
The hexafoil pointed petalled base is engraved all over. Each petal has a very finely worked enamel worked on pale blue and gold. Images on the enamels include Cross, The Chalice of Salvation, and floral work.
The enamels are interspersed with fine gold beading work throughout.
The edge of the base steps down with fine beading and engraving work to the edge.
The matching well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. It has an engraving of Pax, Alpha and Omega to the centre.
Chalice height 24cm. Base diameter 14.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 10cm. Diameter of Paten 15.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 1,018g.
Complete with original lined, fitted carrying case, bearing the maker's name of Armand-Calliat of Lyon.
