Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 8538
Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice & Paten made in France by the Favier family of silversmiths, who worked in Lyon in the second half of the 19th century.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have the maker's mark.
The calix to the cup is made in filigree work with wheat & grapes in the design. There are three large finely painted oval enamels, depicting Faith, Hope and Charity.
The circular stem is finished with fine engraving throughout.
The central knop has six circular deep blue enamels, spelling 'JESUS+'.
The hexafoil petalled base has decorative work on three petals. The other three panels have three large coloured oval enamels, depicting The Sacred Hearts of Jesus, Mary and St Joseph.
The edge of the Chalice steps down with engraving to the step and fine beading round the bottom edge.
The matching well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. It has a very fine enamel of Christ at the centre, with engraving round 'Hoc Est Enim Corpus Meum' in Gothic lettering.
Chalice height 26cm. Base diameter 16cm. Diameter of top of cup 10cm. Diameter of Paten 14.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 884g.
Complete with original mushroom shaped case for carrying and storage.
