Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 8671
Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice made in France by the French Silversmiths Jamain and Chevron of Paris, 1865-1879.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have their maker's mark.
The calix to the cup is made in thick decorative work all round, finished with three circular enamels in colourful Gothic decorative style.
The hexagonal stem is engraved throughout. The central hexafoil knop is decorated wtih bunches of grapes, and has six circular coloured enamels work on a turquoise background, spelling 'JESUS+'.
The base is highly decorated in a hexafoil petalled shape. Three large raised statues depict The Holy Family. The three petals between each have a large tear-drop shaped enamel in colourful decorative Gothic style worked on a deep blue background.
The remainder of the base is finished with raised decorative work an engraving, with a small blue enamelled cross to one side.
The edge of the base steps down with fine engraving work and beading.
The blending well shaped Paten was made by Favier Freres, who worked in France during the same period. It is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. It has an engraved design of a PAX, Alpha & Omega set within a cross, to the centre.
Chalice height 28cm. Base diameter 18cm. Diameter of top of cup 10.5cm. Diameter of Paten 16.5cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 1,118g.
