Antique French Gothic Chalice Ref 8727
Antique French Gothic Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice & Paten made in France in the 19th century, by the Silversmith Louis Bachelet, who worked in Paris between 1844 and 1877.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, with two tone gilding throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have the maker's mark.
The cup is finished with the top edge being a shiny gilt, and the remainder of the cup being matt gilt finish.
Round the cup is worked a raised frieze of flowers and foliage, set with small coloured stones.
The circular stem has a Matt finish, along with the central knop which is engraved, and set with size small red garnets.
The hexafoil petalled base has a shiny gilt rim round the top, stem with coloured flowers and small coloured stones.
The base has three contrasting circular silver plaques, depicting The Holy Family.
Between these are raised flowers set with small coloured stones. To one side is a blue enamelled cross.
The edge of the base steps down with fine beading work to the edge.
The matching well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. It has a large central cross engraved to the back set with small red stones.
Central to this is a contrasting silver plaque depicting The Last Supper.
Chalice height 22cm. Base diameter 15.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 10cm. Diameter of Paten 15cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 812g.
Complete with original lined, fitted carrying case.
