French Antique Gothic Ciborium Ref 8461
Magnificent ornate French Gothic 19th Century Ciborium made in solid silver gilt.
Ciborium made by French Silversmiths Demarquet Freres, who worked in Paris in the second half of the 19th century.
This Ciborium is made from solid silver and is gilded all over. It bears the French silver hallmark of the period, and the maker's name.
The lid is formed from six panels. Three are set with fine filigree work. The other three have detailed coloured enamels depicting The Annunciation, The Betrothal of Joseph and Mary and The Nativity.
The lid is surmounted with a decorative cross with engraving below.
The edge of the lid is worked is finished with fine beading.
The bowl has a calix made in filigree work, set with three oval shaped enamels of The Sacred Heart.
Above this is a blue and gold enamel with the words 'Ecce Panis Angelorum Factus Cibus Viatorum'.
The hexagonal stem is finished with engraving work.
The hexafoil knop is set with six coloured quatrefoil enamels of angels worked on deep blue background. Filigree work completes the knop.
The base of the stem has six panels, three of which are set with filigree work. The other three have large enamels depicting Our Lord, Our Lady and St Joseph.
The hexafoil petalled base has a semi-circular enamel on each petal. These depict The Flight into Egypt, The Resurrection, The Crucifixion, The Scourging at the Pillar, Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, The Baptism of Our Lord.
The edge of the base steps down with engraving work and fine beading.
Overall Height to top of cross 37cm. Diameter of base 16.5cm; diameter of bowl 13cm; internal depth of bowl 8cm. Overall weight 1,087g.
Complete with brand new lined, fitted case for carrying and storage.
