Antique French Gothic Marian Chalice Ref 8617

Antique French Gothic Marian Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice & Paten made in France by the silversmith L Gilles, who worked in Lyon, France, from 1878 onwards.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have the maker's mark.
The Chalice is dedicated throughout to Our Lady, with numerous scenes and references to her.
The calix to the cup is made in filigree work. It is set with six hexafoil shaped coloured enamels, each surrounded with fine beading.
The enamels depict The Nativity, Our Lady & St Elizabeth with Our Lord and St John, The Immaculate Conception, The Assumption of Our Lady, The Dormition of Our Lady and Adoration of The Blessed Sacrament.
The circular stem is finished with Gothic decorative designs.
The central circular knop is decorated, and has hexafoil enamels. These include The Immaculate Heart of Mary, St Cecilia, St John the Evangelist and other Saints.
The stem leads down to the hexafoil petalled base, with gargoyles leading down.
Each petal of the base is filled with a finely painted coloured enamel, depicting further scenes from the life of Our Lady.
The enamels depict The Betrothal of Our Lady and St Joseph, The Annunciation, Our Lady greeting St Elizabeth, The Nativity, The Presentation of Our Lord, St Anne teaching Our Lady.
The edge of the Chalice steps down with decorative engraving to the steps.
The matching well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well. It has a very fine enamel of The Last Supper at the centre, with fine beading round.
Chalice height 26.5cm. Base diameter 16.5cm. Diameter of top of cup 10cm. Diameter of Paten 15cm. Overall weight of Chalice & Paten 1,320g.
Complete with brand new lined carrying case.
