Antique French Romanesque Chalice Ref 8723
Antique French Romanesque Chalice and Paten in solid silver gilt.
Chalice & Paten made in France by the French Silversmiths Berger Nesme who worked in Lyon, France from 1889 to 1924.
Both pieces are made in solid silver, gilded throughout.
Both are hallmarked with the French silver hallmark of the period and both have the maker's mark.
The cup has engraved round the top 'Hic est enim calix sanguinis mei+' worked on a contrasting silver band.
The small calix at the base of the cup has bunches of grapes to complete the decoration.
The circular stem has columns engraved into it, and the central knop is circular. The text 'ego sum resurrectio et vita' is worked on a central band round the knop.
The base of the stem is splayed, and finishes with four feet reaching onto the base of the Chalice.
Round the top part of the base is worked a continuous frieze of coloured enamels. The design depicts The Annunciation, The Nativity, The Crucifixion and The Resurrection, all worked in one circular scene.
The edge of the base has fine beading all around, and the Chalice sits on four feet.
The matching well shaped Paten is also made in solid silver gilt and fits the Chalice well.
It has Our Lord and St John engraved to the centre, with the text 'qui manducat hunc panem vivet in aeternum' worked round the edge. This work is executed in contrasting silver tones.
