Antique Baroque Chalice and Paten Ref 6804
19th century French Chalice and Paten in Baroque style made in solid silver gilt.
This ornate Baroque Chalice was made by Favier Freres, a well-known family of Ecclesiastical Silversmiths, working in Lyon during the 19th century. Both Chalice & Paten are made from solid silver, hallmarked with the French silver mark of this period and both are gilded all over.
The Calix has three oval roundels depicting Our Lady, Our Lord and St John the Evangelist. In between these are sheaves of wheat, grapes and bulrushes, each of which is surmounted with a raised winged Cherub.
The circular stem leads to the knop, which is also decorated with wheat, grapes and bulrushes, which three winged Cherub heads between.
The round base has three large scenes illustrating The Adoration of the Shepherds, The Crucifixion and The Placing of Christ in the Sepulchre. In between these scenes are three large standing figures, which depict The Three Virtues: Faith, Hope and Charity.
The edge of the base is finished with sheaves of wheat, between which are three pairs of raised, winged Cherub heads.
Chalice comes with blending solid silver gilt well-design Paten, made by the equally well-known silversmith Alexandre Thierry. The Paten is also made in solid silver and is gilded all over. The centre of Paten has an IHS with Crown of Thorns engraved, and fits the Chalice well.
