John Hardman Sterling Silver Ciborium Ref 8491
English solid sterling silver Ciborium, made in Birmingham in 1864 by John Hardman & Co.
John Hardman Silversmiths worked with Pugin on many Pugin designs. This is a substantial sized Ciborium by Hardman.
The Ciborium is completely solid silver and is gilded all over. It bears the sterling silver hallmark and maker's mark throughout.
The inside of the bowl and lid are also gilded.
The lid is surmounted with a 4 sided cross. Round the edge of the lid is Gothic style engraving work.
The bowl is also engraved, and the small petalled calix has fine engraving all round.
The hexagonal stem leads to the decorative central knop, finished with six lozenges, each with a floral design engraved.
The hexafoil petalled base continues the themes engraved on bowl.
Overall Height to top of cross 30cm. Diameter of base 16cm; diameter of top of bowl 13cm; depth of bowl 7cm. Overall weight 721g.
