Antique solid silver Sunburst Monstrance Ref 6682
Solid silver gilt 19th century French sunburst Monstrance, complete with solid silver Lunette and original fitted carrying case.
Made by the French Silversmiths, Berger-Nesme, who came from a long line of family silversmiths dating back from the 17th century.
Charles-Frederic Berger and Henri Nesme, who made this Monstrance, worked together in Lyon between 1889-1897
In addition to the maker's mark, the Monstrance & Lunette are hallmarked throughout with the French 19th century silver mark.
The Monstrance is made in silver, and is gilded throughout, in places using a two tone gilt finish.
The large sunburst is finished (both front & back) with a layer of filigree work surrounding the central glass, the front side set with small red stones.
Around the central glass are set diamante effect stones, with fine gilt leaves extending onto the glass.
The sunburst is surmounted with an ornate decorative cross, set in the centre with a red stone.
The circular stem leads to the knop. Set above this are two standing doves of pieces, looking upwards to the Gloria.
The knop is encircled with blue and gold enamel, bearing the names of the Four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Set between these names are more small red stones.
On the base are four large coloured enamels set in pointed ovals, depicting the Four Evangelists. The base is further finished with raised decorative work.
Four large dragons are set at the base, supporting the Monstrance. The bottom rim of the base itself is finished with two tone decorative work.
The Monstrance comes complete with solid silver Lunette, enclosed with glass. The internal diameter of the Lunette is 7.3cm.
The Monstrance height is 76cm. The width across the sunburst top is 40cm & the base is 25.5cm across the maximum points. The weight of the Monstrance is 2,930g.
The Monstrance has its original lined, fitted case.
