Antique solid silver Sunburst Monstrance Ref 6815
Solid silver gilt late 19th century French sunburst Monstrance, complete with Pyx, Lunette and original fitted carrying case.
Monstrance made in the latter part of the 19th century by the French Silversmith Henri Nesme, who came from a long line of the Nesme family of silversmiths working in Lyon.
The Monstrance is made in solid silver throughout and is gilded all over. It bears the French silver hallmarks of the period and the maker's name.
The centre-piece of the sunburst has fine filigree work incorporating grapes of the vine in the design.
Set on the filigree work are 12 detailed, coloured enamels, depicting the 12 disciples.
The central glass is surrounded with diamante effect stones and decorative work.
The outside rays are interspersed with flowers set with more small diamante stones.
The same filigree work is repeated on the reverse side of the Monstrance. On the back, this work is set with 12 round lozenges with Gothic decorative work to each.
The top of the Monstrance is surmounted with a decorative cross at the top with the Victorious Lamb of God in the centre.
The hexagonal stem leads to the knop, which is surmounted with a crown.
The knop is set with six coloured Gothic style enamels including a cross, the anchor of hope and floral designs.
The bottom part of the stem is finished with fine engraving and leads to the 6 petalled base.
The base is finished decorative bunches of grapes, and three coloured enamels of Our Lord, St Joseph and another Saint.
The bottom part of the base is finished with decoration, and the Monstrance stands on three Gargoyle feet.
The height of the Monstrance is 65.5cm. The width across the sunburst top is 35.5cm & the base is 22cm across. Internal diameter of the centre is 8.5cm. The weight of the Monstrance is 2,524g.
The Monstrance comes complete with a gilded Pyx, finished with a blue enamel to the front matching one of the enamels on the knop.
The Pyx measures 14cm in height and the base measures 11cm in diameter.
The Lunette is gilded and fits both the Monstrance & the Pyx.
The Monstrance comes with brand new lined, fitted case.
