Antique Gothic Chapel Set Ref 7623 - comprising Chalice, Paten & Ciborium
Ornate 19th century French Gothic Chapel Set in solid silver gilt. The set comprises Chalice with Paten, and matching Ciborium.
The set was made by the Silversmith Jean-Alexandre Chertier, who worked in Paris from 1857 onwards.
Chertier was a highly renowned French silversmith of this period who worked with well known architects such as Violet-le-Duc, and for many significant Churches, Cathedrals and Shrines in France and further afield.
All the pieces are made in solid silver, and are gilded all over; each pieces bears the French silver hallmark of the period and the maker's mark.
The Gothic style Chalice is finished with fine engraving work, coloured stones and enamels.
Round the cup is the Latin inscription in Gothic lettering 'Hic est enim sanguis meus novi testamenti'.
The calix has engraving work and is set with six small round blue and gold enamels. These depict The Sacred heart of Jesus, St Joseph, St Adolph, Our Lady & Child, St Augustine, St Ambrose.
The hexagonal stem leads to the decorative knop, which is set with six diamond shaped coloured stones.
The hexafoil petalled base is finished fine engraving throughout. On each petal is a blue and gold round enamel. These depict St Benedict, St Peter, St John, St Leo, St Michael the Archangel, St Therese.
The edge of the base is finished with fine beading all round.
The matching well design Paten has a fine engraving to the centre of the Victorious Lamb. The Latin text 'Agnus Dei Panis Vivus' surrounds the edge.
The Paten is gilded all over and fits the Chalice well.
The height of the Chalice is 23.5cm; the diameter of the base is 16cm; the diameter of the top of the cup is 10cm.
The diameter of the Paten is 16cm. The overall weight of the Chalice and Paten is 841g.
The design of the Ciborium echoes that of the Chalice, with fine engraving work, coloured stones and enamels.
The circular lid on top of the Ciborium is finished with fine engraving. It is mounted by a decorative cross with a small stone to the centre.
Round the bowl is the Latin inscription in Gothic lettering 'Ecce panis angelorum factus cibus viatorum'.
The calix has engraving work and is set with six small round blue and gold enamels. These depict Christ, St Adolph, Our Lady & Child, St Francis de Sales, St Joseph, St Eulalia.
The hexagonal stem leads to the decorative knop, which is set with six diamond shaped coloured stones.
The hexafoil petalled base is finished fine engraving throughout. On each petal is a blue and gold round enamel. These depict St Michael the Archangel, St John, St Peter, St Monica, St Augustine.
The edge of the base is finished with fine beading all round.
The overall height of the Ciborium to the top of the cross is 28cm; the diameter of the base is 16cm; the diameter of the top of the bowl is 13cm; the depth of the bowl is 6cm.
The overall weight of the Ciborium is 720g.
The total combined weight of all three pieces in the set is 1,561g.
The Chalice and the Ciborium each come with a brand new lined fitted carrying case.
