Antique solid silver Sunburst Monstrance Ref 7701
Solid silver gilt 19th century French sunburst Monstrance, complete with solid silver Lunette, Pyx & carrying case.
Made by the French Silversmith, Jean-Alexandre Chertier, who worked in Paris from 1857-1890.
In addition to the maker's mark, the Monstrance & Lunette are hallmarked throughout with the French 19th century silver mark.
This is a large, ornate Monstrance in sunburst style, finished with fine enamels, engraving and coloured stones.
The cross at the top is finished with decorative gargoyles to each point, and a central coloured stone.
The sunburst has fine engraving and raised beading effect to the rays.
The centre is a quatrefoil shape, with blue enamel overlaid with decorative work, incorporating four raised cherub heads and set with coloured stones.
Around the central glass, ais a blue and gold enamel with the words 'Ecce Panis Angelorum Factus Cibus Viatorum'.
The circular stem leads to the large central hexagonal knop, set with pillared arches, each with a large coloured arched enamel. These depict The Sacred Heart of Jesus, St Peter, St Joseph and Child, St Paul, The Immaculate Heart of Mary, St Vincent de Paul.
The hexafoil shaped petalled base is richly decorated throughout.
On each Petal is an enamel, these are depicting The Pious Pelican, The Hive, Agnus Dei, The Sacred Fire, The Stag and the Ark of the Covenant.
The base steps down with engraving on each step, and a pointed hexafoil edge.
The Monstrance comes complete with solid silver gilt Pyx & Lunette. The Pyx has an engraved Gothic IHS to the door, a decorative knop and a hexafoil petalled base.
The original Lunette is in solid silver gilt, enclosed with glass to both sides. It fits both the Monstrance and the Pyx well.
The Monstrance height is 84.5cm. The width across the sunburst top is 41.5cm & the base is 24cm across the maximum points. The weight of the Monstrance is 2,410g.
The Pyx is 20.5cm high. The base diameter is 13.5cm. The internal diameter of the Lunette is 6.5cm.
Overall weight of Monstrance with Lunette and Pyx 2,972g.
The Monstrance comes complete with a brand new lined, fitted carrying case.
